Spasticity

Spasticity is abnormal movement across a joint, often due to abnormal nerve signals going to the surrounding muscles, due to either brain or spinal cord injury.  Ideally, we would fix the primary problem(brain or spinal cord) but current medical science is not that advanced yet.  Therefore, we address the secondary issues.  The foundation of spasticity treatment is therapy.  Physical and occupational therapy is needed for all patients with spasticity.  The next line of treatment is medical(often with the assistance of neurology, using Baclofen, Zanaflex, etc).  Once those avenues have been exhausted, surgical management is considered.  Surgical management is either orthopedic(muscle lengthening) or neurosurgical(rhizotomy or Baclofen pump).  The treatment must be tailored to the patient.  Our team has decades of experience treating patients with spasticity and will find the optimal treatment for you.
